Aer Studios - The Next Chapter

Thirty years is a long time in any industry. In creative technology, it's practically a geological era. We've been through the birth of the commercial internet, the smartphone, social media, the cloud, and now AI. We've outlasted trends, platforms and agency models that once looked permanent. And in September, we turn thirty.

We could mark that with a party and a nice LinkedIn post. We're doing both, if we're honest! But thirty years isn't really a moment to look back and admire the view. It's a moment to ask what the next thirty are for. So this is less an anniversary announcement and more an invitation - to clients, to partners, to the people who might want to build the next chapter with us.

Where we've come from

We started as a small team who believed - stubbornly, it turns out - that clients shouldn't have to choose between outstanding creative work and serious technical rigour. That belief hasn't moved an inch in three decades, even as almost everything else around it has. It's why the BBC became one of our founding clients and has stayed with us ever since, and why organisations like the BBC, Dogs Trust, CEPI, Great Ormond Street Hospital, Historic Royal Palaces, Breast Cancer Now, Diabetes UK, UK Gov, CNN, Cartoon Network and Beano have trusted us with work that genuinely matters to the people on the other end of it.

Along the way we've rebuilt ourselves more than once. We became a certified B Corp, holding ourselves to a higher bar on the impact we have on people and planet, not just clients and shareholders. We launched Aer Venture Studios, putting our own creative and technical capital behind founders building something new. We've grown a leadership team who share the same instinct - that this work is worth doing properly, and worth doing for reasons bigger than the invoice.

None of that was inevitable. It was the accumulation of thirty years of small, deliberate choices about who we work with and why. The next chapter is about us making that choice more deliberately, more publicly, and with more people, than ever before.

A new home, and why it matters

For much of our history, home has been The Old Malthouse in Box - a beautiful, historic building in Wiltshire that gave us space to grow and a strong sense of who we are. We're grateful for it. But the next chapter needed a different kind of home, and we've found it in Bristol, moving to Queen Square in the heart of the city, and taking up our residency at The Sheds in Temple Quarter, a hub built by the University of Bristol specifically to bring industry, academia and emerging businesses together around the future of creative technology.

This isn't a change of postcode for its own sake. Bristol and the wider South West is one of the most interesting creative technology ecosystems in the country - and one of the most under-celebrated. We've spent real time in that ecosystem already - hosting innovation workshops at The Sheds' Neutral Labs, partnering with MyWorld and Bristol Creative Industries on Bristol Technology Festival, and running sessions asking a properly cheeky question - why shouldn't the South West host SXSW's European home, rather than London? The conversations we've had in those rooms kept surfacing the same themes - extraordinary talent, real collaboration, an "underdog" energy and a rebellious streak.

Being based in Bristol gives our designers and technologists direct access to a thriving creative and technology hub with world-class immersive and production facilities, and puts us in daily contact with the researchers, strategists, designers, developers, investors and founders shaping what comes next. It also gives us a proper home for something we've wanted to build for a while - a physical and digital lab where cultural institutions, charities and funders can come and experience what creative technology can actually do for their mission, not just talk about it in the abstract.

Alongside this move, we are launching an entirely refreshed brand identity built around a singular, active promise: delivering Creative Technology that matters.

This refresh is a platform for us to articulate a direct call to action - to our clients, our partners, and the ambitious talent looking for a highly progressive and ambitious digital studio to build a career.  A call to action for us to join forces - to focus our collective energies on building digital experiences, products and services that directly benefit people and planet.  A call to action to collaborate with us on the creation of products, services, experiences, interfaces and ventures that measurably advance important causes and missions.

Says Tom Harber, CEO

“We always knew 2026 was going to be a significant year. After all, we knew the business was going to turn 30. But I'm not sure we quite anticipated what was to come. We had grown, evolved and matured in so many ways. It was clear that we needed to refresh our vision and brand to meet a rapidly changing competitive landscape but knew we couldn’t do this alone - cue Scott! We did a pretty deep strategic review that allowed us as a leadership team to look at the business in ways we hadn’t before. It unearthed the true potential for us, and triggered a whole series of significant decisions.  Honestly, just one would be a serious undertaking! What followed was a complete reframing of our brand and a new articulation that matches our ambition. We then needed a new look - cue Jay! We now have a new website that aligns with our values and standards! And the final piece of the puzzle - the move to where the action - and the UK’s best creative tech talent is - cue Bristol! 2026 will be a landmark year for us to remember -  and the start of our most important chapter yet”.

Here’s to the next 30 years - we are certain they will be even more exciting than the last 30!

The Landscape: breaking through the noise

The agency and consultative world is caught in a trap. While overall market demands are growing, a sweeping industry clearout has left fewer agencies standing in 2026. Traditional approaches are actively failing clients.

Organisations that are led by purpose are constantly forced to settle for frustrating compromises:

  • The Transformation Consultancies sell abstract, deck-heavy strategy (and that hasn’t changed with AI either!) but completely lack the deep engineering chops, brand voice, and creative focus to execute it beautifully.

  • The Specialist Executioners may execute well, but their brands are rarely synonymous with breakthrough creative thinking.

  • The New “AI-native” Entrants pitch speed and rock-bottom pricing, risking a race to the bottom in the process.

Our objective at Aer Studios is straightforward - to lean aggressively into our position as a leading Creative Technology force for good. We combine strategy-aligned, breakthrough creativity with mission-grade technology. Our clients face massive systemic challenges, meaning that every pound spent must be unequivocally attached to positive impact and measurable outcomes. We do not expect our clients to have to choose between outstanding creative engagement and mission-critical technical rigour - we deliver both as a baseline standard.

Radical Clarity: a mission-led focus

To navigate an industry currently being squeezed by hyper-commoditisation, we have unified our philosophy under a single, non-negotiable principle: we are mission-led in everything we do.

For us, being mission-led is not a vague corporate social responsibility checkbox or a positioning statement. It is a structured approach that dictates how we evaluate every digital experience we have the opportunity to conceive, build, and support:

  1. The World Mission: How does this initiative advance critical global outcomes, like public health or animal welfare?

  2. The Organisation Mission: How does it support the core, systemic objectives of the client?

  3. The Brief Mission: What specific digital challenge are we trying to solve?

  4. The Studio Mission: How are we moving the needle on user engagement, user experience, digital sustainability, and user accessibility and inclusion?

By viewing every opportunity through those four elements, we ensure that our engineering and design work directly supports human, societal and environmental progress.

Convening forces around unifying causes

We are aligning our collective talent, and the talents of our partners and collaborators, around a targeted set of core causes that are common challenges our clients face today:

  • Audience Engagement: Charities, non-profits and visitor attractions are caught in a brutal battle for human attention against platforms engineered by the world’s most sophisticated attention specialists and shifts in generational engagement behaviour. We build interactive digital experiences that build deep consumer community, belonging and advocacy.

  • Digital Sustainability: The carbon footprint of the digital ecosystem can no longer be ignored. We build hyper-efficient code frameworks, reduce technical data weight, and advocate for sustainable open-source web ecosystems to reduce environmental damage.

  • Accessibility & Inclusion: True digital accessibility is a fundamental human right. We rigorously test and engineer our systems against the premier global accessibility standards as a default - but we also dig deeper into building more diverse design and engineering teams to build inclusivity in -  to ensure nobody is left locked out of the digital economy.

  • Ethical AI Application: We cut past the deceptive industry hype. We focus heavily on the practical application of AI in experience design, bringing critical thinking to improve AI deployment, and ethical, transparent development.

  • Developing Young Talent: We actively create pathways, structured mentorship opportunities, and open platforms to foster the next generation of diverse creative and technical professionals entering the digital ecosystem.

Active Cause Catalysts

We are actively stepping beyond the passive boundaries of a traditional fee-for-service digital partner. We view our studio as a proactive Cause Catalyst - an engine room designed to facilitate, bring people together, stimulate and co-create solutions for complex structural problems.

We are well-known for facilitating cause-focused events - pulling together forward-thinking clients, cross-industry partners, and investors to co-create real-world digital solutions. Whether we are deploying an in-house team via our tailored project models or incubating new tools inside Aer Labs, we don't wait for ideal briefs to land on our desks - we help shape them from the ground up.

Platforming our people

Our studio brand and our mission-led focus are only as credible as the human beings who engineer them every day. The traditional agency structure treats its people as invisible units of production hidden behind an anonymous corporate shield. We are explicitly rejecting that outmoded model.

We believe that clients buy people. They invest in us because they want to collaborate directly with inspiring, creative, technically rigorous human beings. As part of our new chapter, we are giving our team members a dedicated space to build their own public professional profiles, and open-source our thinking and approaches. By identifying individual specialists with specific industry topics, we directly highlight the real human culture and values guiding our work.

Explicitly attaching our value to impact and outcome

We want to completely reshape how value is built and exchanged in the digital design economy. For decades, the creative technology agency sector has been trapped in a linear, transactional model that charges clients for units of time rather than real value delivered.

We already invest in ventures, converting design and engineering time to equity.  Our next chapter will see us sharing directly in the long-term risks, ownership, and rewards of the meaningful platforms we build alongside our client partners, collaborators and co-creators - attaching our commercial terms to pre-agreed outcomes and metrics.

This is not a new model, but it’s still atypical in the industry, and we believe that our purpose to catalyse causes deserves a commercial model that invests all parties in the target outcomes.

This is our call to action

We are not making these bold, transformative claims lightly - we are inviting challenge and we have built our capability to deliver proof in the open market.

Above all, we are inviting collaboration in the genuine sense - building an ego-free and mutually supportive ecosystem to move some vital missions forward for the benefit of people and planet.

If you're a client, or thinking about becoming one - if you're carrying a mission where the outcomes actually matter, where the stakes are high enough that "good enough" digital work isn't good enough, we want to hear about it. That's the kind of work we thrive on.

If you're a partner - a university, a fund, a fellow studio, a public body, a founder building something bold - we're actively looking for people who want to build the creative technology story for the next 30 years with us, not just watch it happen. Come to a Cause Catalyst session. Help us build something amazing. The room is bigger with you in it.

If you're a creative technologist - a designer, a developer, a strategist, a delivery expert -  if you’ve spent your career so far wondering why the work you're proudest of and the work that pays the bills so rarely overlap - come and see what we're building in Bristol. We are, quite deliberately, trying to become the studio people point to when they talk about creative technology done with purpose.

The next chapter is open.

Let's build something brilliant - together.
